Lane Closings Set

Near Fayetteville FAYETTEVILLE - Drivers on Interstate 540 near Fayetteville can expect lane closings today, Highway Department officials said Friday.

Traffic will be reduced to one northbound lane between the Wedington Drive and Porter Road interchanges at various times from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The closing is necessary to replace pavement markings on the stretch of highway being widened.

Adjustment of the times of any announced lane closings may become necessary because of weather or other unforeseen conditions.

In July, the Arkansas Highway Commission awarded a $16.6 million contract to Pace Construction of St. Louis for the project. The project will add a third lane for both the northbound and southbound lanes on I-540 between Wedington Drive and Porter Road.

Officials urged motorists to use care and think ahead when traveling through the work zone. They should obey signs, maintain a steady speed, leave room between vehicles, be aware of road conditions and anticipate the need to stop or reduce speed substantially because of construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone. Increased traffic enforcement is scheduled in the work area.
