Lane closures planned for I-540 Saturday in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE — Drivers on Interstate 540 around Fayetteville can expect lane closures Saturday, highway department officials said Friday.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in the northbound direction of I-540 between the Wedington Drive interchange and the Porter Road interchange at various times from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The lane closure is necessary to allow for replacement of the pavement markings on the stretch of highway that is being widened.

Adjustment of the times of any announced lane closures may become necessary due to weather or other unforeseen conditions.

In July, the Arkansas Highway Commission awarded a contract, in the amount of $16.6 million to Pace Construction of St. Louis for the project. The project will add a third lane for both the northbound and southbound lanes on I-540 between Wedington Drive and Porter Road.

Motorists are urged to use care and think ahead when traveling through the work zone. They should remember to obey the posted speed limits and other signing; maintain a steady speed; leave room between them and other vehicles; be aware of road conditions in front of them; and, anticipate the need to stop or reduce speed substantially due to construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone. Increased traffic enforcement is scheduled in the work area.
