Russians putting on best face

Germany’s Maylin Wende comes close to Daniel Wende’s skate in the pairs short program in the team figure skating event Thursday at Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi. The Germans are fifth in the team standings.

They are designed to celebrate a millennium of Russian might and this country’s modern rebound, and kick off two weeks of extraordinary human endeavors and planetary sportsmanship, but more than anything today’s ceremony opening the Sochi Olympics will be about one man: Vladimir Putin.
