Bentonville Library Partners With Community For Bird Count

BENTONVILLE — Joan Reynolds of the Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society will teach families how to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Walmart Community Room at the library, 405 S. Main St.

Reynolds has been a volunteer and member of the society since 2002. Her love of birds developed as a child spending time outdoors in south Arkansas as well as camping and hiking in Northwest Arkansas, according to a news release.

The count is an international science project in its 17th year. The four-day event encourages bird watchers to count birds for a real-time snapshot of where birds are. The count went international in 2013, and bird sightings were recorded from 111 countries.

Children will be able to make their own bird feeder crafts with pine cones, vegetable shortening and seed donated from Central Garden and Pet. The company also donated bird feeders to hang outside the library’s windows.

The library’s Children’s Department also will host bird-themed after-school crafts from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
