Little celebrates 90th birthday

John D. Little of Kingston will celebrate his 90th birthday with a drop-in reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the American Legion building in Kingston.

Little’s children and their spouses - Tom and Deb Little, Linda and Johnny Turner, Janet and DeanMusteen and George Ann Little - will be hosting the celebration.

Friends and family are invited.

Guests are asked to bring cards instead of gifts. Those unable to attend may send cards to John D. Little, P.O. Box 63, Kingston, AR 72742.

Benefit assists ailing teenager

A benefit concert is set from 2 to 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at ROTC Grill in Fayetteville to help the family of Alex Smith, 13, of Elkins, who suffers from a form of brain cancer.

Smith is recovering from brain surgery at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. The fundraiser will help cover expenses.

Performances by Josey John, Daniel Parker, Tyler Clark, Richard Burnett, Isayah Warford, Jed Clampit, Dawn Cate-Bonner, Earl Cate and Left of Center are planned. A guitar raffle and silent auction will also be held.

Donations may be made to the Alex Smith Medical Care Fund at Arvest Bank.

Harrington’s art featured in show

“Dream II,” a monotype print of a koi fish by University of the Ozarks associate art professor Tammy Harrington, has been accepted into the 2014 Small Works on Paper exhibition. The show is hosted by the Arkansas Arts Council.

The exhibitionwill feature 39 artists and will tour the state through November. The exhibit will be on display at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville this month.

Small Works on Paper will be at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville March 2-30 and at the Alma Performing Arts Center April 1-30.

Other artists whose work is in the exhibit are Shawn Adair of Van Buren, Don Lee of Fort Smith, Cindy Arsaga of Fayetteville, Kathy Attwood of Eureka Springs, Rhee Reamy of Huntington, J.P. Bell of Fayetteville, Dan Snow of Springdale, Joanne Jones of Fayetteville and Cindy Wiseman of Fayetteville.

UA students win for ‘Spire’

University of Arkansas Honors College students Adel Vaughn and Mary Nell Patterson won the Student Award at the 2013 Envision Little Rock Ideas Competition for their design “Silver Spire.”

Both are third-year landscape architecture students at the Fay Jones School of Architecture. The design features ribbons of aluminum that spiral 250 feet high around a transparent elevator shaft that would offer visitors a view of the city.

Vaughn and Patterson took home a $1,500 prize from the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau.
