BASKETBALL ASU-Lyon men’s game postponed

The Lyon College men’s basketball game at Arkansas State, which was scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed due to inclement weather and unsafe travel conditions in northeast Arkansas.

The game will be played at 7:05 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro.

“We would have liked to play the game [Tuesday], but after discussions with the administration here at Lyon, we felt that it was not worth putting our student-athletes’ safety at risk by traveling in these weather conditions,” Lyon Athletic Director Kevin Jenkins said in a release from the school.

Both teams have games scheduled for Thursday. Arkansas State travels to Texas-Arlington and Lyon will face Williams Baptist in Walnut Ridge.

BASEBALL Poindexter keeps UAM undefeated

Senior D’Marco Poindexter hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Arkansas-Monticello a 6-3 victory over Henderson State on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Henderson State tied the game 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI ground out by Will Powell and an RBI double from Hunter Mayall. Arkansas-Monticello got two infield singles and a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the inning to set up Poindexter’s home run.

The Boll Weevils (4-0) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Ben Agredano, followed by an RBI double by Austin Braddock. The Reddies (0-4) could not take advantage of a bases loaded, one-out situation in the top of the seventh, but finally scored in the eighth on a two-out single from Ashton Roberts.

Jeff Harvill (1-0) picked up the victory for UAM despite allowing the tying runs in the ninth inning. Nick Vanthillo (0-1) took the loss for Henderson State after giving up all three hits and three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Arkansas Tech wins again

Senior Mike Kattula went 3-for-3 and junior Kris Ayers went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI as Arkansas Tech defeated Tarleton State 3-2 on Tuesday in Houston.

Arkansas Tech (3-1) scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning. Zac Johnson led off with a double, then Ayers singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jay Johnson grounded out, scoring Zac Johnson from third.

The Wonder Boys added two more runs in the sixth when Ayers doubled down the right field line to score Patrick Castleberry and James Sharp. Tarleton State (1-1) got both of its runs in the seventh inning.

Freshman Trent Armstrong was the winning pitcher.

SOFTBALL Dow, Wilson earn conference honors

Southern Arkansas freshman designated hitter Maddie Dow was named the Great American Conference’s co-Player of the Week on Tuesday, while Arkansas-Monticello senior pitcher Courtney Wilson was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.

Dow hit her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the fifth inning of a 3-1 victory over Shorter University. On Monday, Dow set conference and school records for at-bats in a game (7) and single-game RBI (7) in a 22-17 victory over Midwestern State. For the week, Dow hit .292 with 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 9 RBI.

Wilson threw a three-hit shutout in UAM’s 2-0 victory over Christian Brothers on Saturday. She struck out 2 and walked 1 on 89 pitches.
