Rogers High Girls Fall Short

ROGERS - It was a week of late rallies that came up short for the Rogers High girls basketball team.

The Lady Mounties cut an 11-point defi cit to one in the final seconds of a 47-45 loss to Rogers Heritage on Tuesday and they then rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit for a 34-32 lead before falling 39-37 to Springdale Har-Ber on Friday.

Lady Mounties sophomore Kiara Henry had a good look at a game-winning 3-pointer with five seconds left but the shot hit the rim as the Lady Wildcats held on for the win Friday.

Rogers (6-12) fi nishes the first half of the 7A/6A-West Conference schedule at 3-4 and they are still in the thick of the race for a spot in the Class 7A Tournament.

“We’ve let a few slip through our hands this year, and I know these are hard on the kids,” Lady Mounties coach Preston Early said. “It’s just frustrating. We had several good looks, and we were in a position to do it. I’m proud of our kids for battling.”

The Mounties (6-11, 0-7) also dropped two games last week and they will probably need to win at least four times, maybe more, over the next seven games to make a return trip to the state tournament.

Play of the Week: The Lady Mounties trailed Heritage 39-28 going to the fourth period but junior Callie King hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the period to start a late rally. Senior Cassandra Trexler then hit a 3-pointer and a free throw after being fouled on the shot to cut the deficit to 46-45 with 5.4 seconds left. But Rogers could not come up with a steal in the backcourt as the Lady War Eagles won for the first time ever in King Arena.

Players of the Week: Mounties senior Hunter Hill scored 20 points in the loss to Har-Ber while Zach Street tallied 22 points in a loss to Heritage. Libby Ganoung scored 14 points against Heritage and added 12 points against Har-Ber. Callie King had 14 against Har-Ber and 12 against the Lady War Eagles.

Notable: The Lady Mounties went 13 minutes, 54 seconds between points in the loss to Har-Ber. … The Mounties led Har-Ber 15-11 at the end of the fi rst period and 32-31 at halftime.

Up Next: Tuesday is an off day for the 7A/6A-West. Rogers return to action when they travel to play Springdale High Friday.The Lady Mounties started league play with a 53-49 upset of the Lady Bulldogs. The Mounties lost 67-49. The Lady Mounties can win the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Lady Bulldogs, which could loom large at the end of the season, with a victory or by losing by three or less points.

Both teams return home Feb. 11 when Siloam Springs visits King Arena.
