Fire department members meet

The Wheeler Fire Department will hold its annual members’ meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the fire station, 6946 W. Wheeler Road in Fayetteville. Participants will discuss the budget and plans for 2014. Light refreshments will be served.

Red Cross launches

pet first aid app

Pets are an important part of many families, and a new American Red Cross Pet First Aid App puts lifesaving information right in the hands of dog and cat owners so they can provide emergency care until veterinary assistance is available.

The 99 cent Pet First Aid app gives iPhone and Android smart phone users instant access to expert information to learn how to maintain their pet’s health and what to do during emergencies.

The Pet First Aid App provides step-by-step instructions, videos and images for more than 25 common first aid and emergency situations, including how to treat wounds, control bleeding, and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies. Information provided within the app helps pet owners to increase their recognition of health problems and when to contact their veterinarian.

Additional topics include burns, car accidents, falls and what to do for coldand heat-related emergencies.

The Pet First Aid App and other Red Cross apps can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross or by going to redcross.org/mobileapps.

Campaign seeks

library friends

The Friends of the Bella Vista Public Library are sponsoring the annual membership drive beginning Monday and ending Feb. 28. Anyone is welcome to become a member, a friend. The annual fee of $10, as well as other annual fundraising events, is used to support the growing needs and expanding goals of the library. Membership fees can be paid at the library or mailed to theBella Vista Public Library, 11 Dickens Place, Bella Vista 72714.

Families sought for spring classes

The Arkansas Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council is accepting participants in the Family Leadership Project “Partners in Policymaking” class. Parents and guardians of children with developmental disabilities or individuals with developmental disabilities are invited to attend. The training is designed to provide education and information about programs and services.

The classes are scheduled for April 25-26, May 16-17 and June 6-7 at the Jones Center in Springdale. Participants may be reimbursed for the cost to attend according to state policy. Lodging may be provided on a case-by-case basis. Space is limited.

Institute offers adult classes

The Adult Education Center at Northwest Technical Institute in Springdale is continuing to offer free educational opportunities to the community. Classes in GED preparation, English as a second language, U.S.

citizenship, computer skills, Compass prep and more are offered Monday through Saturday at the center and at various locations in Springdale. Microsoft Office Specialist certifications are also available.

Additional career preparation assistance is available.

NTI is the only adult education facility in Northwest Arkansas where a student may complete theentire GED process from preparation to official testing in one location. All instructors hold Arkansas state teacher licenses.

Knitting group offers ‘support’

A six-week knitting support group will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning this week. The group will use knitting as a mentally and physically meditative activity that provides a soothing outlet for daily chaos, as well as an opportunity for expressing creativity. The group will be led by Cassy Dominck, licensed associate counselor.

Cost is $150 plus materials. The group will meet at the Art Experience, 641 W.

Arts festival seeks entrants

The Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks in Fayetteville is accepting entries for the local competition of this year’s National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Veteran artisans may contact the Voluntary Service Office at (479) 444-4016 for instructions on submitting an entry.

Entries for VHSO’s local competition are being accepted through Feb. 22.

There are five divisions: art, creative writing, dance, Ddrama and music, with more than 120 different categories including painting, leatherwork, craft kits, wheelchair dancing, patriotic poetry vocal solo and more. To qualify for entry, artists must be enrolled for care at VHSO or one of VHSO’s Community Based Outpatient Clinics or reside in a state Veteran’s home.

The local competition artists’ reception will be held at 1 p.m. March 7 in the auditorium. The public is invited to attend. First place winners from the local competition will go on to compete at the national level for possible selection to participate in the 2014 Festival.

Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education, Springdale, will hold a free financial seminar, “Master Your Money,” from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 13. Learn how to set money goals, basics of budgeting, ways to cut expenses on utilities and more. Speaker is Mark Foster of CCOA.

Seminars explain

health care act

The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce and its health care committee, The Whole Body Project, will host several free seminarsthroughout the spring of 2014 in order to educate and inform the community about the changes in Health care and the Affordable Care Act.

The Arkansas Insurance Department has partnered with the federal government to establish this insurance marketplace where individuals, families and small businesses can compare qualified health insurance plans in Arkansas and choose the plan that best meets their needs. Consumers and small businesses have been able to shop for, compare and enroll in high-quality, affordable private health insurance at competitive prices. These seminars will help individuals sign up for this health care and decrease the number of the uninsured population in the area.

The first series of seminars will be presented by Arkansas Health Connector, conducted by Brandie Cooper, an in-person assistor guide with Friendship Community Care. Cooper will educate the community on the Affordable Care Act and will discuss how to enroll in healthcare coverage.

Seminars will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 19; 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20; 10 a.m.

to noon March 20; and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 27.

All seminars will be held at the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, 123 W. Mountain St., Fayetteville. Light refreshments provided by Table Mesa will be served.

Small business seminar topics

“Facebook Business Pages Marketing and Analytics” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.

Tuesday at the University of Arkansas Reynolds Center.

The presenters of Modthink, a professional social media strategy firm from Northwest Arkansas, will review the recent changes in Facebook business pages, present techniques for how to tell your business’ story about your people, processes and products, and weave them successfully into a call to action. Participants will also receive advice and instruction on maximizing visual impact on their sites, frequency of contact issues, how to make posts and share content most effectively with followers, and how to read and apply to a marketing plan, Facebook insights and analytics reports.

Bring laptops to work on a Facebook page. Individual page critiques and suggestions will be offered. Cost is $30. Early registration is required at sbtdc.uark.edu.

Hearts Abound serves community

The Razorback Chapter of International Association of Administrative Professionals is holding its third annual Hearts Abound service project from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Uptown Campus East breakroom (between Uptown East Campus and West Campus).

Chapter members and their guests will enjoy a potluck dinner and make Valentine’s Day cards for residents of assisted living facilities. Family and friends are encouraged to participate.
