Gators (19-2) silence Aggies

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Patric Young has a message for anyone who believes Florida’s success this season has to do with it playing in a conference that has only two teams ranked in the top 25 polls.

“We’re not the No. 3 team in the country for no reason,” Young said. “We can’t control what other people say about our team. Look at the stats, look at what we’re doing, look at the record.”

Michael Frazier II scored 21 points, Dorian Finney-Smith added 11 and the third-ranked Gators overwhelmed Texas A&M 69-36 on Saturday.

Florida (19-2, 8-0) pushed its winning streak to 13 games and extended a school record for consecutive home victories to 27. It’s the third time in program history the Gators have started 19-2, with the last two (2005-2006, 2006-2007) ending in national championships.

The latest victory was another defensive gem, maybe the best of the season. It tied the fewest points Florida has allowed in SEC play since 1950, matching last year’s defensive effort against South Carolina.

Florida held the Aggies (12-9, 3-5) to 26 percent shooting and 20 percent from three-point range. The Gators also outrebounded A&M 57-27.

The Gators closed the first half with a 12-2 run that turned a seven-point lead into a double-digit advantage. They were up 34-17 at the break, and the lead would have been bigger had they hadn’t missed 11 of 12 shots from behind the arc.

Coach Billy Donovan’s team found its long-range rhythm early in the second half, with Frazier and Scottie Wilbekin each connecting on threes, and Florida really started pulling away. Frazier’s second trey made it 53-24 with 12:27 to play.

The Gators coasted from there.

NO. 11 KENTUCKY 84, MISSOURI 79

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Aaron Harrison scored 21 points and James Young added 20 to help No. 11 Kentucky beat Missouri.

The Wildcats (16-5, 6-2 SEC) kept their poise one game after calling a player-only meeting to discuss the team’s issues away from home. Andrew Harrison’s three-pointer just 1:42 into the matchup gave the team a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Jabari Brown finished with a career-high 33 points and Jordan Clarkson scored 28 to keep Missouri (16-5, 4-4) in the game. Clarkson’s layup with 51.9 seconds remaining narrowed the Tigers’ deficit to 80-77, but Aaron Harrison answered with a layup 30 seconds later to end the threat.

Missouri’s frontcourt offense only mustered three points. The team fell to 43-3 at home under third-year coach Frank Haith, but has lost two of its last four.

AUBURN 74, GEORGIA 67

AUBURN, Ala. - Chris Denson scored 18 points and Auburn made six consecutive free throws over the final 34 seconds in a victory over Georgia.

The Tigers (10-9, 2-6 SEC) went 11 of 13 from the foul line over the final five minutes to secure their second consecutive SEC victory after dropping 16 in a row.

Auburn had five players score in double figures. KT Harrell scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half and made three three-pointers. Freshman Tahj Shamsid-Deen, a Georgia native, finished with 12 points and four assists while Asauhn Dixon-Tatum and Allen Payne scored 10 apiece.

Charles Mann scored 18 points and Nemanja Djurisic had 11 for the Bulldogs (10-10, 4-4).

MISSISSIPPI 75, S. CAROLINA 71

OXFORD, Miss. - Marshall Henderson scored 21 points, Jarvis Summers added 15 and Mississippi rallied from a 15-point deficit in the second half to beat South Carolina.

South Carolina pushed ahead 61-46 with 10:53 remaining, but Ole Miss methodically fought back. Summers drilled a three-pointer with just under four minutes remaining to give the Rebels a 67-66 lead - their first of the second half.

Ole Miss (15-6, 6-2 SEC) shot 44.1 percent (26 of 59) from the field. LaDarius White scored 12 and Aaron Jones added 11.

The Gamecocks’ (8-13, 1-7) Brenton Williams scored 23 points and Sindarius Thornwell added 18.

VANDERBILT 55, MISSISSIPPI ST. 49

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Rod Odom scored 18 points, and Vanderbilt beat Mississippi State for their third consecutive victory.

Vanderbilt (12-8, 4-4 SEC) returned to Memorial Gym after winning its first two road games this season and started a three-game home stand by adding yet another victory over Mississippi State.

Kyle Fuller added 14 points and Damian Jones had 13 for Vanderbilt, which is playing with only seven scholarship players.

Fred Thomas scored 16 points for the Bulldogs (13-8, 3-5).

TENNESSEE 76, ALABAMA 59

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Jordan McRae poured in 26 points, including five three-pointers, to lead Tennessee to a victory over Alabama.

Jarnell Stokes finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds and Josh Richardson scored 12 points for the Volunteers. Trevor Releford scored 23 points and had six assists and Nick Jacobs scored 13 points for the Crimson Tide.
