Bowlin’s Move Works For Har-Ber

Sunday, February 2, 2014

A change in the starting lineup paid off for Springdale Har-Ber.

Senior Brandon Buccheri came off the bench Friday after struggling with his shot in recent games. But Buccheri contributed consecutive 3-pointers to start a 14-0 surge that lifted Har-Ber to a 72-57 victory at Rogers High. The baskets were the only points of the game for Buccheri, who was a top scorer for the Wildcats before his recent struggles.

“In the first half, I’m going to prove a point that if our guys don’t come out and play hard on both ends of the court, they are not going to play,” Har-Ber coach Scott Bowlin said. “I like the way our starters, our top 7, responded with what happened in the fi rst half.”

Har-Ber finished 9 of 18 on 3-pointers after starting 1 of 5 from beyond the arch. Sophomore JP Brandon scored 19 points, followed by Rickey Jones with 12 and Mason Cline with 10.

Har-Ber (11-8, 3-4) won two games last week following a four-game, conference losing streak.

The news wasn’t as cheerful for the Har-Ber girls (16-4, 6-1) despite a 39-37 victory over the Lady Mounties. Leading scorer Bailey Schalk re-injured her back in the fourth quarter and did not return. She finished with eight points for Har-Ber, which held on after leading 24-9 at halftime.

“She says she’s OK, but we’re going to hold her out of practice for two or three days,” Har-Ber coach Sandy Wright said. “Thankfully,we’re off Tuesday and, hopefully, we’ll get her back by Friday’s game.”

Play of the Week: Fayetteville had just taken a secondhalf lead when Brandon and guard Andrew Davis answered for Har-Ber. Davis swept into the lane and fell to the fl oor to put the Wildcats ahead again by three points.

Players of the Week: JP Brandon is proving he is one of the top newcomers in the 7A/6A-West this season. The sophomore forward led Har-Ber with 19 points against Rogers and 16 points against Fayetteville. He scored 15 of his 19 in the first half against the Mounties. Paige Redmond combined for 27 points in victories for the Har-Ber girls over Rogers and Fayetteville.

Notable: Har-Ber used two victories last week to move into a fourth-place tie with Fayetteville in the conference standings. Har-Ber holds the tie-breaker after beating the Bulldogs 49-43 at home on Tuesday.

Up Next: Most 7A/6A-West Conference teams will take Tuesday off before resuming league play on Friday. Har-Ber will play at Siloam Springs, which lost the boys game and won the girls game against Rogers Heritage.
