BENTONVILLE — A Duson, La., man pleaded not guilty Friday to charges filed in connection with the robbery and death of a Springdale man.

John Armando Guerra, 55, is charged in connection with capital murder and aggravated robbery in connection with the murder of Edward Abel.

Joel Huggins, one of Guerra’s attorneys, told Circuit Judge Brad Karren he reviewed with Guerra the criminal information, possible punishments and his constitutional rights.

“We are prepared to enter a not guilty plea,” Huggins said.

Guerra then pleaded not guilty when questioned by Karren.

Abel, 62, was stabbed to death, according to court documents. He was pronounced dead at Northwest Medical Center-Springdale. Abel lived in the portion of Springdale in Benton County.

Guerra fought extradition while in custody in Norfolk, Va., but was returned to Benton County earlier this week.

James Michael Smith, 48, of Springdale also has been charged in connection with the case. Smith is charged with capital murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated residential burglary. He previously pleaded not guilty. Smith is being held without bond in the Benton County Jail.

Prosecutors haven't announced whether they will seek the death penalty for Guerra and Smith.

Abel was found unresponsive in his home following a 911 call at 11:15 p.m. Aug. 16, according to a news release from Springdale police. Abel called a woman, but the call went to voice mail. When the woman listened to the message, she heard a dog barking and heard Abel say, “Just take my wallet.” The woman then called 911.

David Reading, deputy prosecutor, told Karren that Guerra has no ties to the area and a detailed criminal record. Reading wanted Guerra to be held without bond. Karren ordered Guerra be held in the jail without bond.

Guerra understood he would be held without bond since he's charged with capital murder, Huggins said.

Three people also have been arrested in connection with stealing from Abel.

Pamela Jerrolds, 48, of Springdale; John Adams, 32, of Springdale; and Sydney Adams, 31, of Duncan, Okla., have been arrested on charges of theft of property and theft by receiving, both Class B felonies.

Jerrolds and Sydney Adams are being held in the jail on $150,000 bonds. John Adams is being held on a $200,000 bond.

Affidavits detailing the crimes have been sealed. Karren set a Feb. 12 hearing so attorneys can review the affidavits and decide whether any redactions are necessary.
