FAYETTEVILLE — The U.S. Conference of Mayors awarded a $10,000 grant Friday to the city to fight prescription drug abuse.

The grant was awarded through the Safeguard My Meds Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Recognition Program.

Awards were given to local initiatives that have the greatest potential to reduce the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs, particularly among young people.

Fayetteville earned first place in the small city category for its Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Program.

The city plans to use its award to commission the production of a video public service announcement and expand its education efforts.

Philadelphia, Indianapolis and Columbus, Ind., also received grants.

Grants were awarded into two categories: small city, which includes a population of less than 100,000, and large city, which includes a population of 100,000 or more.

An independent panel of judges evaluated applications based on innovation, creativity, mayoral involvement and potential impact.
