TULSA — A mixed bag of precipitation is likely in Arkansas and Oklahoma as an arctic cold front gives the new year a wintry start.

The National Weather Service in Tulsa says frozen precipitation will be possible beginning on New Year's Day and continuing through Saturday night as a strong upper level storm system approaches from the southwest.

Forecasters say the greatest precipitation is likely Friday and Friday night. Rain will be most likely in southeastern Oklahoma and west central Arkansas. A wintry combination of rain, freezing rain and sleet is most likely across northeastern Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas.

Depending upon the track of the storm system, forecasters say the precipitation may end as snow in Oklahoma and Arkansas on Saturday and Saturday night, especially near the Kansas and Missouri borders.
