Whining Isn't Everything

I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to thank Bass Trumbo ["Winning At All Costs Is Losing, Dec. 6] for his insightful article regarding November's Republican victory.

I was unaware that only the vile Republican Party had access to huge amounts of outside money.

I was unaware that all those negative ads were actually placed on the air only by the contemptible Republican Party.

I was unaware that the evil Republican Party was running openly racist ads against the most popular and effective president since ... well, since ever.

I was unaware that the awful Republican Party was a de facto extension of the Nazi Party.

I was unaware that the despicable Republican Party cheated during the election by encouraging people to vote early and vote often (well, Mr. Trumbo did not say that exactly, but he did enlighten me on how deceitful the Republicans were during the last election while the Democrats were completely honest).

Yes, if Jonathan Gruber's "stupid voters" had not been misled by the likes of Asa Hutchinson and Tom Cotton, our nation's current course would not have been sullied by the conservative malcontents who defy our right to become a nanny state.

I thank Bass Trumbo for making it clear to me that the Democrats' commentary about their losses is not "sour grapes"; rather they are entitled to complain because those "sour grapes" have turned into whine.

As Mr. Trumbo noted, Grantland Rice was an eloquent sportswriter. He coached a Vanderbilt baseball team for a season, but he was not a coach. From the press box, it is easy to say that it's not about winning; rather it's about how you play the game (it makes losing hurt less). But if you are a coach, paid to win games, your words become less eloquent. As UCLA Bruins coach "Red" Sanders said, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."

Sports are a game. Politics is not. The direction our society will take is dependent upon our political persuasion. Sports entertain us along the way (or distract us from reality). I am thankful that Bass Trumbo so clearly expressed the deep-felt discontent among the Democrat liberals. I only wish they would see the fact that they lost the election because Gruber's (Obama's?) "stupid voters" have wised up. The Republicans do not get a pass in this election; they did not win because they are Republicans. They won because they promised a different course. We will see if anything changes.
