Scully rings in Christmas with jewelry

Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully (right), standing with Commissioner Bud Selig, was in a state of panic when he thought he lost his 1988 World Series ring after leaving Costco in Los Angeles. Much to Scully’s surprise, his wife Sandi found it in the bottom of one of the shopping bags.

Vin Scully lost his 1988 World Series ring Tuesday while shopping at a Costco in Los Angeles, but it turned out to be a feel-good story in the end.

The longtime Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster said he lost his ring while grabbing ribs, putting them in plastic bags and loading them into his cart while his wife Sandi watched.

When Scully and his wife went to their car, he noticed his ring was gone. It was one of Scully's six World Series rings but the only one he still had after giving the others to his children.

Scully alerted the Costco manager and then called the Dodgers, who went on Twitter to alert their followers.

Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke talked to Costco assistant general manager Elias Rahhal, who acted like he had lost his own ring.

"I went into a panic," Rahhal told Plaschke. "I assured him we'd do everything to help find the ring. Vin is like family to us."

Plaschke reported that Scully and his wife drove home, with Scully reminding himself along the way that it was just a piece of jewelry and that it didn't compare to a loving family that awaited a holiday celebration they had planned.

"You know, maybe God heard me say that," Scully told Plaschke.

Someone must have been watching out for Scully, because as he was unloading items from the car he heard a cry from inside the house. Sandi had found the ring at the bottom of the bag while emptying the ribs.

Scully phoned Rahhal with the news and wished him Merry Christmas, then called the Dodgers' Steve Brener and wished him Merry Christmas.

"I'm still laughing about it," Scully said.

Invincible, huh?

Former NBA center Darko Milicic, a 7-0 Serb who was the second pick in the 2003 NBA Draft behind LeBron James, has lost his first kickboxing fight.

Milicic, 29, sustained a bloody cut on his left leg in the first round of an exhibition match Thursday night against Serbian fighter Radovan Radojcic in Novi Sad, Serbia. The World Kickboxing Association bout had to be stopped in the second round on doctor's orders.

"The next time, it will be better," Milicic said. "I'm invincible."

The Detroit Pistons bypassed Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade to take Milicic with the second pick in 2003. The team then went on to win the 2004 NBA title.

Milicic, who has been without an NBA contract for two years, also played for Orlando, Memphis, New York, Minnesota and Boston during his time in the league.

Tweet, tweet

New York Knicks President Phil Jackson had enough of Charles Barkley's criticism during the Knicks' game against the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night.

So he went to Twitter to voice his displeasure with the TNT analyst.

"Do I have to mute this game?" Jackson tweeted. "Chuck just remember your fundamental ... key to triangle."

Barkley fired back at Jackson on the broadcast.

"I don't do any social media, but he's too old to be tweeting," Barkley said. "Phil's got sensitive in his old age."

The Knicks fell to 5-23 after Thursday's 103-97 loss to the Bulls. They are off to the worst start through 28 games in franchise history.
