Basketball: Elkins Holds Off Mansfield

ELKINS -- Elkins wasn't exactly clicking on all cylinders offensively Friday night, but the Lady Elks played well enough defensively to grind out a 38-28 win over Mansfield.

"We had way too many turnovers," Elkins coach Monica Wells said. "We struggled with just catching the basketball at times. I am just glad we were able to turn it up a notch late and play well enough to win the game."

Karly Krodell hit a bucket just before the buzzer at the end of the third quarter to give Elkins (7-5, 2-0) a little breathing room with a 28-23 advantage going into the fourth. The Lady Elks slowly pulled away from there and Mansfield could manage only five points in the quarter, which came after Elkins had built the lead to 34-23.

Krodell had eight points along with Paigely Barnett and Mariah Hendrix led the way with nine. Elkins had a balanced attack with Bella Pitts and Alleigh Strahman both adding six points.

Kaylee Pyles led Mansfield (4-10, 0-2) with nine points and Paige Holland had seven for the Lady Tigers.

Part of Elkins struggles could be attributed to senior point guard Alicia Welch sitting on the bench with a sore ankle for the first three quarters. Welch came into the game in the fourth and scored only one point, but handled the ball efficiently with the lead.

"She missed the last game and we wanted to hold her out tonight," Wells said. "The trainer gave us the OK and she certainly wanted to play. We have other kids that can play the position, but with Alicia being a senior she just kinds of settles everything down."

Elkins returns to the floor after Christmas at the Berryville Tournament and returns to 3A-1 West play against Lavaca after the new year.

"We've got about a week-and-half off and that should do us some good," Wells said. "We'll get in some good competition at the Berryville Tournament and be ready to get back to conference play."

Boys

Mansfield took advantage of Elkins' lack of depth in the fourth quarter, using a full-court press to score 29 points in the final quarter.

Elkins (2-7, 1-1) had an already thin roster due to discipline dismissals and lost two players to fouls and another to a late injury.

Mansfield (7-5, 1-1) trailed Elkins, 50-42 late in the third, but swarmed ahead after that.

Tyler James scored 25 points, Tristen Nason had 21 and Tyler Hearron added 17 for the Tigers.

Travis England had 20 in the first half and finished with 30 for the Elks. Trevor England had 13.
