Northwest Arkansas Teachers Receive National Certification

Several Northwest Arkansas teachers were recently recognized as National Board Certified Teachers.

Teachers can spend three years documenting their teaching and undergoing peer review for the certification honor.

There were 214 Arkansas teachers who received the National Board Certification this year, according to the Arkansas Department of Education. That gives Arkansas the fourth largest numbers of new certifications in the nation this year, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. There were 4,155 new certifications nationwide.

Fayetteville teachers are: Carol Acree, Sarah Applegate, Todd Ballinger, Suki Highers, Michael Jacobs, Anastasia Mann, Amy Matthews, Megan Meggers, Kerry Mitchell and Brandy Pledger.

Rogers teachers are: Kelsey Armstrong, Janie Darr Elementary School; Pam Ben, Kirksey Middle School; Caity Church, Oakdale Middle School; Kara Davis and Haylee Pierce, Mathias Elementary School; Jennifer Reddick, Northside Elementary School; April Shelby, Elmwood Middle School; Kerry Spurlock, Tillery Elementary School; Kayla Sullivan, Grace Hill Elementary School; and Emily Taylor, Rogers High School.

Springdale teachers are: Tesha Reading, Anna Gawf and Stacey Donavan, Hunt Elementary School; Marian Hendrickson and Sarah Deverges, J.O. Kelly Middle School; Jaime Rabasa, Har-Ber High School; Raquel Morris, George Elementary School; Ashley Kirby, Smith Elementary School; and Kellie Isaacks, Bayyari Elementary School.

Bentonville are: Maolina Yang, Bentonville High School; Alexander McKnight, Lincoln Junior High School; Reid Pierce, Fulbright Junior High School.

Arkansas traditionally ranks among the top 10 states in the nation for National Board Certified Teachers. This year it was 12th. Arkansas teachers receive a 10-year $5,000 bonus for certification and school districts may award an additional bonus. There have been 2,778 Arkansas teachers to date who have achieved the certification, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
