Nonprofits offer islands of security, food, hope

As we do every year, NWA Media has invited the nonprofit organizations that help our community all year to ask for help in return.

Their wish lists will appear in the Our Town section every Thursday through Jan. 1.

OASIS of Northwest Arkansas

What: OASIS of Northwest Arkansas provides safe, sober, subsidized housing, mentoring and an on-site workplace/social enterprise known as "Tranquility" for women in recovery from addiction, abuse, trafficking, incarceration and childhood trauma. The nonprofit will continues to expand its facilities and services in 2015, with a new home for three to four residents.

Wish List: New or gently used furnishings and decor for three bedrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen. Bedding for three double beds. The "Tranquility Studio" is also in need of a large flat-screen television, eight low-back task chairs, eight sewing tables, craft project tables and stools.

Meals on Wheels of Benton County

What: Meals on Wheels of Benton County was initiated in 1984, when several churches in Rogers recognized the need to provide food and daily contact to those shut in by age or infirmity, allowing them to avoid nursing home placement. They are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The first meals were delivered on March 11, 1985.

Wish List: Canned no-sugar-added apple, blueberry and cherry pie fillings, low sugar canned peaches, canned mixed vegetables, canned yams and monetary donations to purchase fresh fruit, vegetables, cake mixes, meat and fresh bread. The organization is also in need of volunteer drivers.

House of Hope Rescue Mission

What: The House of Hope Rescue Mission on Emma Avenue in Springdale is a day center for the homeless and needy that has been open for three years and serves 300 clients a week. Services include snacks, coffee and water throughout the day, a hot meal served at 11 a.m., help with job searches, counseling, washers and dryers, showers and a food pantry and clothing room, all at no cost to clients. The center is open to anyone.

Wish List: Perishable and canned items such as canned meats, peanut butter, canned fruit, boxed macaroni, cereals and canned vegetables, tables and chairs for seating, monetary donations to expand building and service capabilities. Donations may be made through the website.
