ELKINS -- Haas Hall Academy got its first glance at life in the 3A-1 West Conference on Tuesday. One game in, the Haas Hall boys learned keeping up with their new conference mates requires an extra gear.

Neither team had a decided depth advantage, but Elkins used speed and skill at the guard positions to create plays on offense and force turnovers on the defensive end. And while Haas Hall did its best to keep up for a half, the Elks took over as the game wore on in a 74-62 win in the conference opener for both teams.

"We had some issues defensively and just some very basic stuff we need to work on," Haas Hall coach Basil Seymour-Davies said. "(Elkins) is very quick and they took advantage of some stuff.

"I think the biggest thing about this new conference is top to bottom there's not a huge drop off in any of the teams. When we were in Class 1A, there was a big disparity from top to bottom. So it's been quite a transition moving to this level of play."

Elkins (2-5, 1-0 3A-1 West) forced 21 turnovers to offset Haas Hall's big rebounding edge. But the Elks' win was still in doubt at intermission, clinging to a 42-36 lead as both teams were willing to race up and down the court through the first two quarters.

The third quarter was almost all Elkins, however, as a 9-0 run at one point set the tone.

"I think we're a very quick and athletic basketball team and we can really run and jump," Elks coach Nate Smith said. "I thought Travis England did a really good job in the second half on defense on their No. 21 (Tyler Browne). We held him to six points in the second half and really shut him down.

"So we really responded like I wanted them to and I was really pleased."

Hunter Casebolt and England each finished with a game-high 24 points for Elkins. Lemuel Rebel led Haas Hall (6-8, 0-1) with 19 points.

The Haas Hall girls (3-11, 0-1) had a rough night in their 3A-1 West Conference opener against Elkins.

Elkins (5-4, 1-0), despite being without returning starter Alicia Welch who was out with an ankle injury, built an 18-6 lead after one quarter and never allowed more than two Haas Hall field goals in a single quarter in the easy victory.

Bella Pitts led the Lady Elks with 13 points.
