Water Quality Research In Watershed Focus Of Meeting

CAVE SPRINGS -- The Illinois River Watershed Partnership will host a public meeting where researchers from Arkansas and Oklahoma will present the latest water quality findings from the Illinois River Watershed.

The meeting is from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Illinois River Watershed Learning Center, 221 S. Main St.

The Illinois River Watershed Partnership Board of Directors, members and sponsors, as well as the general public are invited.

Presenters will be Dr. Brian E. Haggard, director of the Arkansas Water Resources Center at the University of Arkansas, and Dr. Garey A. Fox, director of the Oklahoma Water Resources Center at Oklahoma State University.

They will discuss findings from the 2014 Illinois River Symposium, held Sept. 5 and hosted by the Cherokee Nation and Cherokee Environmental Program at the Cherokee Casino in West Siloam Springs, Okla., according to a news release.

"The symposium was unique, bringing together universities, state agencies and stakeholders from both states, and the common goal was to set priorities for research and extension needs within this important watershed," Haggard said. "We know that phosphorus in the Illinois River has decreased dramatically since 2002, when effluent phosphorus was reduced. And we expect to see phosphorus continue to decline in Flint Creek, too."
