GREENLAND -- In case anyone forgot, it was Mansfield that shocked the Greenland girls with an upset in the first round of Class 3A regionals last year and kept the two-time defending state champs at home instead of in their usual spot in the state tournament.

Monday night was payback time.

With Mansfield moving in to the 3A-1 West Conference this year, the two are now conference foes and the Lady Pirates welcomed the visiting Lady Tigers with a 75-31 thumping.

"It was Feb. 26," Greenland coach Alan Barton said. "We weren't looking at this game as a chance to get them or anything like that. We were just looking at it like it's a conference game and it's time to play ball ... But it was nice to come out and play well."

Greenland (10-1, 1-0) hadn't played in a little more than a week since losing to Springdale Har-Ber by one in overtime in the finals of the Greene County Tech Invitational.

"We had a little break, and we have had a few good practices," Barton said. "We just want to come out and play with a lot of intensity, especially on defense and good things are going to happen," Barton said. "We came out and hit some shots early and we kept playing hard."

Greenland jumped out to a 15-4 lead with its starting five, and the second platoon rotated in at the midway point of the first quarter and pushed the score to 27-7. Mixing the two in the second quarter, Greenland rolled out to a 52-14 lead at the halftime break.

Kiana Thompson, playing in the second platoon, poured in eight points in the last four minutes of the first quarter and had 13 of her game-high 15 at the half.

"She is doing everything we have asked her to do at this point," Barton said. "She is playing very unselfish, too, but we she wanted to she drove it in and scored. She is playing very hard right now."

Senior guard Kelsey Vaughn had 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Kim Crown and Sarah Wright each had eight along with Makayla Redmond off the bench.

"We have 10 girls that are very even, and if we play unselfish and are balanced they are all going to play about 16 minutes and score about 8-9 points," Barton said. "That is what we are looking for. Tonight was a good example of how when we do that we play well as a team."

Greenland will host Haas Hall Academy on Friday in its next game.

Paige Holland led Mansfield (4-9, 0-1) with eight points. Kylie Ward added five.

Boys: Greenland 74, Mansfield 54

Greenland (4-5, 1-0) came out with a hot hand, running out to a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and carried the momentum to a 20-point win to open 3A-1 West play.

"We shot the ball well, and that cures a lot of problems," Greenland coach Jared Gobel said. "We've had our struggles shooting early and we have put in some extra practice in just working on our shooting the basketball."

Zac Wolfe and Ty Gaines each scored 20 points for the Pirates.

Tyler James led Mansfield (4-4, 0-1) with 18 points.

Greenland led 34-22 at the half and 56-36 heading to the fourth quarter, answering each of Mansfield's attempts to get back in the game.
