LR leaders from all walks get Neighborhood Awards

Little Rock has its own version of the BET (Black Entertainment Television) awards: the Arkansas Neighborhood Awards, which recognize minority-owned businesses organizations, religious and neighborhood leaders, churches and others "for their contributions and excellence within their own neighborhoods."

Said to be "for the people, by the people," the awards are given based on pre-event voting.

This year's Neighborhood Awards took place Aug. 24 at the Metroplex in Little Rock. Silver, circular trophies were awarded in 30 categories, including Community Leader of the Year, an award that went to Little Rock city director Ken Richardson; and Entertainer of the Year, an honor that went to local singer Nicky Parrish.

Other winners included Louis Butler of Butler Furniture Depot, Entrepreneur of the Year; Korto Momolu, Best Fashion Designer; Arkansas Sickle Cell Support Services, Best Nonprofit; Theresa Baker, Best Promoter; and Marilyn Rutledge, Best Teacher. St. Mark Baptist Church captured the titles of Best Church and Best Church Choir, and the Rev. William H. Robinson Jr. was given a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The show was interspersed with performances by vocalists Parrish, Jeron Marshall and rapper Chane "Epiphany" Morrow, and trumpeter Rodney Block. Highlighting the evening was an energetic performance by the Rev. Cedric Hayes and the Gloryland Pastor's Choir.
