Ballet artistry in abundance at Midsummer's fundraiser

Sunday, August 31, 2014

Several tiny winged fairies flitted through the crowd at South on Main on Aug. 24. Dressed in iridescent yellow and purple costumes, these ballerinas were the youngest dancers at A Midsummer Night's Dream, a benefit for Arkansas Festival Ballet.

Other dancers, also in costume and part of the ballet's youth company, helped pass hors d'oeuvres and greeted guests at the door. Later in the evening the dancers performed scenes from Felix Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream ballet.

Raffle winners received either a Nashville, Tenn., getaway with tickets to the Nashville Ballet; a cooking class at the Viking Cooking School in Greenwood, Miss.; or a cooking class for 12 with South on Main chef Matthew Bell.

Arkansas Festival Ballet will begin its season at the Acansa Arts Festival on Sept 28. (The name Acansa refers to the local Quapaw Indian tribe as the "people of the southern place" or "Acansa" in the Siouan tongue.)

Rebecca Stalcup is the Arkansas Festival Ballet's artistic director. Kim Meyer-Webb and Amy Bell were event chairmen.
