Disturbance call ends in standoff

VAN BUREN -- A Van Buren man was jailed Friday after withstanding seven tear gas canisters while barricaded in his bathroom and finally giving up when police used a bomb squad robot to talk to him.

Daniel Yates Franklin, 59, of 2304 Durango Drive was held in the Crawford County jail Friday in lieu of $150,000 bond on charges of first-degree terroristic threatening, aggravated assault and third-degree battery.

Van Buren police Lt. Stephen Staggs said Franklin had threatened to shoot police when they answered a domestic disturbance call about 11 p.m. Thursday by his wife, Lisa, a Van Buren city employee, that Franklin had been drinking and had beaten her.

When they approached Daniel Franklin, he told officers he had a weapon and locked himself in the couple's master bedroom, Staggs said.

About 7:30 a.m. Friday, police used the Fort Smith Fire Department's bomb squad robot, which has a sound system, to urge Franklin to surrender. Franklin finally gave up about 8:30 a.m.

Police found several handguns and rifles inside the Franklin home, some loaded, Staggs said.
