Complaint against Witt filed by GOP

Information said omitted from signs

The Republican Party of Arkansas filed a complaint Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission alleging that the campaign for Democratic 4th Congressional District candidate James Lee Witt had violated two federal election rules by omitting information on campaign materials.

The complaint, signed by Republican Party of Arkansas Executive Director Megan Tollett, alleges that small yard signs advertising "Witt for Congress" did not include disclaimers saying that Witt's campaign committee had paid for the signs. The laws require that the disclaimer be printed in a specific font size, contain specific language and meet other requirements. Tollett also noted in the complaint that the sign had a trademark symbol and the mark of a local printers union, but did not include any disclaimer about who had paid for it.

Party Chairman Doyle Webb called the signs, "another example of how Democrat James Lee Witt thinks the rules don't apply to him," according to an email news release issued by the party late Tuesday.

Witt's spokesman said the campaign knew there was a problem with the signs.

"We recently became aware that one batch of campaign signs did not have the appropriate disclosures," spokesman Beau Bishop said. "We took immediate action to remedy this situation. We are working diligently to ensure all of these signs are removed or properly labeled."
