FAYETTEVILLE -- West Fayetteville voters will have one fewer City Council candidate to choose from in the Nov. 4 general election.

Michael Collins, a carrier fleet recruiter and chaplain in the Arkansas National Guard, withdrew from the Ward 4 race Tuesday in a notarized letter to Washington County Clerk Becky Lewallen.

"As political circumstances and divine Providence have arranged my life, I find it necessary to remove my name from the ballot," Collins said in the letter.

Collins threw his support behind John La Tour, one of six remaining Ward 4 candidates.

Collins and La Tour both spoke against a contentious Civil Rights Administration ordinance the City Council approved Aug. 20.

Other candidates in the Ward 4 race are Ray Boudreaux, Craig Honchell, D'Andre Jones, Phillip McKnight and Robert Williams.

Ward 4 includes several neighborhoods west of Reynolds Razorback Stadium and nearly all land west of Interstate 49.

Jennifer Price, Washington County election commissioner, said Tuesday that Collins' name will not appear on the Nov. 4 ballot. Ballots will be sent to the printer Thursday, Price said.

If other candidates withdraw after ballots have been printed, their names will still appear on the ballot, but votes for those candidates won't be counted, Lewallen said.

Early voting for the Nov. 4 election begins Oct. 20. Residents have until Oct. 6 to register to vote for the election.
