Love trade finalized

The Minnesota Timberwolves secured the final piece they wanted in a blockbuster Kevin Love trade. A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the Timberwolves will receive Philadelphia 76ers power forward Thaddeus Young as part of the deal that will send Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The person requested anonymity because an official announcement has not been made. The Wolves agreed weeks ago to send Love to Cleveland, where he will team up with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving to make the Cavaliers an instant favorite in the Eastern Conference. The Cavs agreed to send No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins, former No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett and a 2015 No. 1 draft choice they obtained from Miami to Minnesota to land Love, but Wolves President Flip Saunders and GM Milt Newton immediately went to work to try to get the 76ers involved in the deal as well. The Wolves have wanted the 26-year-old Young to help them replace Love in the starting lineup, and the teams came to agreement on Thursday to make that happen. Young averaged a career-high 17.9 points last season and gives the Wolves another athletic player to put around point guard Ricky Rubio. He also gives the young team another veteran presence in the locker room. Young had two years and more than $19 million left on his contract, but he can become a free agent after next season if he chooses. The rebuilding Sixers will get guard Alexey Shved and forward Luc Mbah a Moute from the Timberwolves and Miami's No. 1 pick next year from the Cavaliers in the deal, which will not be officially announced until today when Wiggins becomes eligible to be traded. A seldom-used NBA rule prevents any rookie from being traded for 30 days after he signs his rookie contract.

Stephen Curry scored 17 points and the U.S. national team pulled away in the second half to beat Puerto Rico 112-86 on Friday night in New York in its final home exhibition game before the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Derrick Rose came off the bench for the Americans, who used 12 of their 16 players and are expected to cut at least a couple of them today before departing for Spain. They will play a final exhibition game there against Slovenia and will need to have their final 12-man roster set the day before their Aug. 30 opener against Finland. All-Star Damian Lillard, Andre Drummond, Gordon Hayward and DeMar DeRozan didn't play. James Harden added 13 points for the Americans.

Missouri: Protocol followed

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel and athletic director Mike Alden say they followed what they believed to be the school's protocol when former running back Derrick Washington was accused of rape in 2008. Pinkel said Friday at a news conference that he learned of the allegation in October 2008 but did not take action because no charges were filed. Alden said he was not aware then of reporting requirements for sexual violence to the Title IX coordinator. Legislation mandates schools to investigate instances of alleged sexual discrimination or violence once it has evidence of an incident. ESPN reported Thursday two former University of Missouri female students made assault allegations against Washington before the two other cases for which he eventually served jail time. University Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin, who took over in Columbia in February, said Thursday that the school "made mistakes in the past" by not investigating the alleged sex assault as required by the federal Title IX law. Washington, a former co-captain and starting running back, was suspended from team on August 26, 2010. Later that month, he was charged with deviate sexual assault in connection with a June 2010 sexual assault of former athletic department tutor Teresa Brackel. In 2011, Washington was sentenced to five years in prison for the sexual assault. He also pleaded guilty in February 2012 to third-degree domestic assault of an ex-girlfriend. The report did not name either woman. Police reports and university documents connected to the two incidents also don't identify the complainants.

Rosol advances

Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic advanced to the finals of the Winston-Salem Open on Friday after beating Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the final tuneup for next week's U.S. Open. Rosol, seeded seventh, will take on the winner of the second semifinal between Sam Querrey of the U.S. and Poland's Jerzy Janowicz today at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. "I've been trying to get ready for the hard-court season, but the practice matches were no good for me," said Rosol, who should crack the top 30 in the world rankings for the first time after Friday's win. "But I'm happy with my results this week. I hope I'm not finished yet." Rosol took a key service break from Lu to go up 5-4 in the third set, then saved three break points to serve out the match and advance to his third ATP Tour tournament final this year. "All the games were pretty tough," said Rosol, who made it to the semifinals after top-seed John Inner of the U.S. withdrew Thursday because of a sprained ankle. Lu, who had beaten Rosol in their only previous meeting last year in Thailand, twice had chances to put away Friday's match early. He used a service break to go up 4-1 in the first set before Rosol rallied, and nearly blew a 5-2 advantage in the second set before winning the set.

• Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova moved into the finals of the Connecticut Open at New Haven for the third consecutive year, beating Australian Samantha Stosur 6-3, 6-1 on Friday. The Czech star served 11 aces, nine in the first set. She broke Stosur's serve to take an early 3-1 lead, and did not face much of a challenge on her own serve, facing just four break points. Kvitova served three aces in the game that closed out the opening set. The No. 4-ranked player in the world cruised from there. Kvitova won the tournament in 2012 and lost to Simona Halep in last year's final. She will face a close friend, Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia, who beat Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-2, 6-4 in the first semifinal on Friday.

Hamilton fastest

Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest time in the second practice of the Belgian Grand Prix on Friday at Spa, Belgium, finishing ahead of Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg as their positions from the morning session were reversed. Conditions were cool and overcast for both runs, although the rain stayed away on the 4.3-mile Spa track -- the longest on the calendar. Times were faster in the afternoon, with Hamilton completing 26 laps and clocking a best lap of 1 minute, 49.189 seconds -- more than half a second faster than Rosberg, who stayed out for two laps longer. The F1 championship resumed this weekend following a summer break, with Rosberg leading Hamilton by just 11 points. The Briton leads Rosberg 5-4 in race victories this season, but has retired from two races. Two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso was third quickest both times in his Ferrari. Four-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel sat out the second session because of a power unit failure due to an electrical problem in the morning, where he finished nearly two seconds behind Rosberg in 11th.

• Chevrolet has clinched its third straight IndyCar manufacturers championship with two races left in the series' season. Chevrolet has won all three manufacturers titles since returning to the series in 2012. Its IndyCar V6 engine program has won 10 of the first 16 races of the season heading into the weekend's event at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Chevrolet supplies Team Penske, which has three of the top five drivers in the overall standings with Will Power, Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya. The manufacturer also supplies a combined eight drivers with Chip Ganassi Racing, KV Racing Technology and Ed Carpenter Racing. Chevrolet returned to IndyCar in 2012 after a six-year absence. The company competed in Indy-style racing from 1986-93 and from 2002-05. The IndyCar season ends Aug. 30 in Fontana, Calif.

Ryan Truex is back behind the wheel of his Toyota for BK Racing at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn. Truex missed last weekend's race at Michigan after he sustained a concussion during a single-car crash during practice. The 22-year-old rookie was taken to the hospital and underwent CT scans of his head, neck, chest and abdomen, which were all negative. J.J. Yeley filled in and finished 30th. Truex was cleared to race on Thursday. He is 37th in the points standings heading into tonight's race.
