Getting Organized

Blogger Ashley Hackshaw of Bryson City, N.C., (www.lilblueboo.com) uses this system to wrangle her collection of photos:

1) Consolidate all photos (from cameras, phones, tablets, etc.) onto the computer.

2) Group the photos by year and month. Hackshaw uses iPhoto but creating folders on your hard drive also works well.

3) Go through each month of photos and keep only the best ones.

4) Upload photos to a photo service for hard copy printing.

5) Organize hard copies into folders with notes and store by year.

6) Create albums (either physical or digital).

7) Back up photos to CDs and/or an external hard drive.

Hackshaw treats each month's worth of photos as a unit, and creates a log to track the status of the units (uploaded to photo services, hard copies printed, backed up to CD and put into albums).
