• "Forty-one and one-third percent of the women of Arkansas are illiterate," was the assertion of Miss Julia Warner in discussing the affirmative side of a debate, "Resolved, That the Laws of Arkansas for Women Are Adequate," at a meeting of the Women's Political Equality Study Club at the home of Mrs. Soloman Schoenfeld yesterday. Miss Warner said that the place of a woman is in the home and that if a nation must have men to do its fighting and protect its boundaries from the assaults of other nations, the mother should stay at home and imbue the child with patriotic ideals, and not spend her time in politics and at the polls. Mrs. Ches Jennings discussed the affirmative side of the question and said that the laws of Arkansas seek to take away the God-given rights of woman.

DENVER, Colo. -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Winthrop Rockefeller of Arkansas said Thursday at Denver, Colo., that Gov. Faubus is attempting to capitalize on the civil rights issue. Rockefeller was in Denver attending a Republican training course for gubernatorial candidates. Rockefeller said civil rights is an active issue in Arkansas and said Faubus has capitalized on it "term after term." "I believe that as the issue is dealt with fairly and squarely," Rockefeller said, "we are going to find that it is not as much of an issue as he would like to make it."

DERMOTT -- The Dermott City Council repealed its controversial curfew ordinance Monday, but a revised version left at least one resident unsatisfied. The revised ordinance adopted in Monday night's heated council meeting resolved the most controversial sections of the law, including provisions for holding parents in a stockade, publishing their photograph in the local newspaper and requiring they identify themselves as irresponsible parents by placing bumper stickers on their cars. Punishment in the new ordinance was limited to fines and up to 30 days imprisonment or 20 hours of community service.
