Petition flaws keep tax repeal off ballot

TEXARKANA -- A move seeking to repeal the 2 percent tax Texarkana has on hotel and restaurant purchases will not be on the November ballot because the petition is deficient, a city official said this week.

The petition seeking to place the measure on the ballot was deficient because of the "absence of the 'full and correct copy of the ... measure proposed' ... and the absence of enacting clause language," according to a letter written Tuesday by City Clerk Heather Soyars to Donnie Walden Sr., who filed the petition with the city in late July.

"This petition was signed willingly by approximately 1,400 Texarkana, Ark., citizens, and I'm sure they will be disappointed in their city government," Walden said.
