Sleeping camper, drive-by gunman die on Oregon beach parking lot

COOS BAY, Ore. — A Michigan man who decided to camp at the Oregon coast after exhibiting at a local recreational vehicle show was shot and killed as he slept by a drive-by gunman who shot up five vehicles in the beach parking lot before fatally turning his gun on himself, authorities said Tuesday.

Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier said that investigators have no motive for the shootings but they have reason to believe that Zachary Levi Brimhall may have also “done harm” to his father, whose vehicle was found in another rural area.

Frasier said investigators found several firearms in Brimhall’s vehicle and called in the Oregon State Police bomb squad after finding bomb-making materials. They had not approached the car belonging to his father, Ray Brimhall, 58, for fear it could also contain explosives.

The sleeping victim was identified as 43-year-old David Jesse Hortman of Walker, Mich., a representative of a recreational vehicle supply company. Frasier said Hortman was taking a week’s vacation after attending a recreational vehicle show in Oregon.
