Travelers finally get to Alvarez in victory

The Arkansas Travelers finally got to their former teammates and preserved a victory in a series finale on Thursday night against the San Antonio Missions.

After Travs closer Trevor Gott blew a save in the ninth inning, Michael Snyder's RBI single broke a tie game in the 10th and the Travs scored three runs off Missions reliever R.J. Alvarez in a 9-6 victory at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio.

Snyder's single drove in Matt Long, who led off with a triple off Alvarez. Adam Melker added an RBI single off Alvarez and Maikol Gonzalez followed with another RBI single. In all, the Travs had four hits and scored three runs off Alvarez, who started the season with the Travs before being traded to the San Diego Padres in a move that sent closer Huston Street to the Los Angeles Angels in July.

Before Thursday, Alvarez had pitched three shutout innings in three appearances against his former team. His loss Thursday was his first of the season for any team.

The Travs took a 6-0 lead in the second off San Antonio starter Justin Hancock. Snyder hit an RBI double and Melker drove in a run with a single. Alex Yarbrough hit his Texas League-leading 37th double, driving in three runs to make it 5-0. Yarbrough then scored on Brian Hernandez's single to make it 6-0 for the Travs, who are 10-2 in August.

But the Missions came back in the bottom of the second on Lee Orr's two-run double, Brian Bixler's two-run home run and Cory Spangenberg's two-run triple.

Arkansas starter Michael Roth settled after that, holding the Missions scoreless over the next three innings while striking out three.
