Driver arrested in fatal crash

CONWAY -- Police have arrested a Conway woman on a negligent-homicide charge as a result of a June 23 wreck that fatally injured a woman in Faulkner County.

Deborah Montgomery-Bland, 55, was charged earlier this month and arrested Wednesday in the death of Mattie Reynolds, 25, also of Conway. According to a document filed in Faulkner County Circuit Court by the prosecuting attorney's office, Montgomery-Bland is accused of driving under the influence.

An Arkansas State Police affidavit says laboratory results found that she tested positive for five depressants, or sedatives. She also had a bottle of hydrocodone in the vehicle and "was unable to express her actions and comprehend what had happened due to her impairment," it says.

Montgomery-Bland was driving an eastbound pickup on U.S. 64 that crossed the center turning lane into westbound traffic and collided head-on with the car driven by Reynolds, according to the affidavit.

A witness told police that he had seen Montgomery-Bland's vehicle driving unsafely before the accident and that he was on the phone with 911 before and during the wreck.
