Arkansas salvaged the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday night against San Antonio, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth inning for a 3-0 victory at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio.
The Missions won the opener 6-3 after the Travelers had taken an early 2-0 lead.
Starters Buddy Boshers of Arkansas and Josh Geer of San Antonio locked up in a pitchers duel in the second game. Boshers went 5 innings for the Travelers, allowing just 2 hits, walking 2 and striking out 7. Geer went 7 innings for the Missions, giving up 3 hits and walking with 5 strikeouts.
Arkansas relievers Danny Reynolds (3-2) and Jairo Diaz were just as impressive. Reynolds allowed 2 hits in 3 innings of relief and struck out 2, while Diaz closed out the victory by striking out Adam Buschini to end it.
The Travelers scored their first two runs in the ninth on a one-out, bases-loaded two-run single by Michael Snyder off Frank Garces (2-5) that scored Kaleb Cowart and Mike Bianucci. After Drew Heid struck out, Erik Stamets singled to center to score Jett Bandy from second base to give the Travelers their 3-0 advantage.
Diaz retired the first two Missions in the bottom of the ninth before Austin Heges and Diego Goris hit back-to-back singles. Diaz then struck out Buschini looking for his fifth save of the season.
The Travelers jumped on top a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the opener on a bases-loaded single by Eric Stamets and a sacrifice by Maikol Gonzalez.
San Antonio scored once in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1, then unloaded for five in the fourth off Arkansas starter Drew Rucinski (10-6). A bases-loaded walk to Buschini tied the score just before Cory Spangenberg cleared the bases with a triple to make it 5-2. Travis Jankowski followed with a sacrifice fly for the Missions' final run.
Arkansas trimmed the deficit to 6-3 on Bianucci's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. The Travelers had a chance to score more when Drew Heid walked to load the bases, but San Antonio reliever Jeff Ibarra (2-1) struck out Cowart to end the threat.
Rucinski gave up 6 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings pitched and struck out 9 Missions.
Alex Yarbrough led the Travelers' offense, going 3 for 4. Stamets had two hits, including a double.
