Wooldridge

turning 95

Crystal Wooldridge of Bentonville will celebrate her 95th birthday with a party Aug. 30 at the American Legion Hall in Cave Springs. The party will take place from 2-4 p.m.

Wooldridge was born Aug. 14, 1919, in Cave Springs to Claude and Nora Murdock. She married Chester Wooldridge in Bentonville and together they had six children -- James Darrel Wooldridge of Pea Ridge, Marilyn Haney of Cave Springs, Ronnie Wooldridge of Aubrey, Texas, the late Shirley Sinor, Janye Worsham of Springfield, Mo., and Donna Smith of Dutch Mills.

Wooldridge also has 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Academy students

win arts awards

Students from the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith's Academy of the Arts won two awards and were nominated for four more during the National Youth Arts Awards for their performances in Shrek: The Musical.

Cameron Law of Fort Smith won for outstanding lead actor in a musical for his work as Donkey, while Lindsay Vickery, also of Fort Smith, was named outstanding lead actress in a musical for playing Fiona. Cody Walls of Greenwood, who played Shrek, was nominated for outstanding lead actor in a musical.

Blake Bulger of Fort Smith was nominated for outstanding supporting actor for playing Lord Farquaad, and Kelsey Vickery of Fort Smith was nominated as outstanding featured actress for her portrayal of Dragon.

The students will be honored at a ceremony in New York City on Sunday.

Cayanan graduates

from AmericCorps

Kevin Cayanan of Rogers graduated from the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps on July 24 after 10 months of community service nationwide. The ceremony marked the NCCC's 20th graduating class.

Cayanan was one of 234 members honored at the Pacific Region campus in Sacramento, Calif. Corps members completed more than 130 projects during their term of service.

Teams of 10-12 AmeriCorps members were deployed to service projects in the Western United States including fire response for the U.S. Forest Service, income tax preparation, building homes for Habitat for Humanity, serving as camp counselors and invasive species removal.

Northfell wins

national award

Amanda Northfell, a communications graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas, won Outstanding Research Paper honors at the Association of Communications Excellence in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Life and Human Sciences conference in Portland.

Northfell, a Springdale native, is completing her master's degree in agricultural and extension education with an emphasis on agricultural communications. She won the award in the Research Special Interest group.

She holds a bachelor's degree in art from the UA. Her paper is titled "Using Reflective Journals to Compare an International Faculty-Led Study Tour and Student Internship Experience."

Lorenzetti finishes

D.C. internship

Maurizio Lorenzetti recently completed the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's Congressional Internship Program in Washington, D.C.

Lorenzetti, a junior at the University of Arkansas, was one of 45 interns chosen from hundreds of applicants to spend eight weeks working in the nation's capital. Lorenzetti was placed in the office of Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio. He is majoring in information systems and is the Time Warner Cable intern.

Rom selected

society president

Curt Rom, a professor of horticulture and interim dean of the Honors College at the University of Arkansas, has been elected president of the American Society for Horticultural Sciences. The group is the largest professional society devoted to horticulture.

It publishes three academic journals -- Journal of the ASHS, HortScience and HortTechnology. The group's mission is to promote research, technological development, outreach and education in the field.

Rom is also director of the Bumpers College honors program at the UA. He began his three-year term as president on July 31.

He will serve a year as president-elect, a year as president and a year as third-year chair of the board.

Bulldog TV spots

chosen for festival

Bulldog Pride and Boogaloo Train -- both productions of Bulldog TV at Springdale High School -- are official selections for the 2014 Varsity Brand All-American High School Film Festival.

Bulldog Pride was produced by Dyllen George, Ty Smith, Chris Hererra, and Raul Aldaco. "Bulldog Pride" was the anthem for the Bulldog Basketball team this past year. Lyrics written by Kentrez Lowe and beats produced by SkyCash.

Boogaloo Train was produced by Kenia Soto. The music video features Papa Rap and DJ Torres and their "make you want to jump up and dance" song "Boogaloo Train."

The films will be screened the weekend of October 24th at the AMC Empire Theater in New York City on Times Square. Participants compete for scholarships and editing software as well as a National Championship ring.
