I am planning to move across town soon and am looking for some good practical advice, especially when it comes to preparing and organizing for the move.

For this request, we turned to professional organizer Becca Clark of Hot Springs with Creative Convenience (convenientlyorganized.com), who recently launched Your Best Move, LLC, (yourbestmovear.com) to help those moving do so in an organized and efficient manner.

Clark offers the following tips for people preparing to make a move:

"First of all, create a folder or binder to keep all moving-related information in one place," Clark says. "You will be referring to it often during and after the process." The file should include information on moving companies, bids, contracts, utilities, and a checklist of tasks to complete.

"This could be fairly simple for those who are moving from an apartment into another small rental unit," she says. "On the other hand, it could be very long and complex if you are moving out of state, selling and buying large properties, or being relocated by your company."

When it comes to packing, it's a good idea to have extra packing supplies on hand for any last-minute needs. Clark suggests getting unprinted newsprint paper from moving companies for wrapping. She also recommends using bubble wrap for delicate items and segregating them from any boxes with heavy things.

"You can never ensure that the 'This Side Up' direction is followed throughout the move," she cautions.

Determine what can fit in the new house and what's to be kept or let go, and donate or sell what is not needed or wanted.

Use the move as a perfect opportunity to rigorously delete stuff even when moving to a larger space, Clark says.

"You are likely paying by the hour and/or the pound, so be clear about what you really use and love. I like to ask, 'Is it moving van worthy?'"

After items are sorted, if you are giving away or selling items to family and friends, set a firm date and stick to it, selling or

donating anything that isn't picked up by the deadline.

Research which charities will pick up donations and set a date well in advance, as some are booked more than a week out, Clark explains. And those planning to deduct their donations from their taxes need to keep a list of items given away.

Label boxes with numbers and keep an associated number schedule to prevent theft and to keep you organized.

For security purposes, personally transport all valuable small electronics and jewelry. And to avoid personal injury, remember to bend at the knees and not the hips when lifting boxes.

Make arrangements in advance for children and pets to be cared for by sitters on moving day to keep them safe and simplify the process, Clark suggests.

"They are a danger and in danger of lots of feet, open doors, confusion and stress."

After pets have arrived in the new home, gently ease them into the new surroundings, allowing them to acclimate at their own pace.

To simplify setting up after the move, label the wires from all electronics as you remove them. Then put the wires in a clear zip-top bag, noting the associated electronics on the outside of the bag.

Also pack a suitcase of toiletries and clothes for the next few days until unpacking can be completed. Don't forget to include towels and washcloths.

It's also a good idea to collect and use local restaurant coupons to feed helpers during and after the move and remember to have a few paper plates and disposable utensils and cups on hand until unpacking can be tackled.
