Middle of order shows up as Phillies beat Astros

PHILLIES 10, ASTROS 3

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies got some major production out of the middle of their order on the way to an easy victory Wednesday night.

Chase Utley hit a three-run home run, and Ben Revere had four hits, including a triple, to lead the Phillies to a 10-3 victory over the Houston Astros.

Ryan Howard had two hits and two RBI with a double for Philadelphia, which had scored just two runs in 35 2/3 innings entering Wednesday. The Phillies topped the Astros 2-1 in 15 innings on Tuesday night.

Utley, Howard and Marlon Byrd -- the Phillies' Nos. 3-5 hitters -- had five hits and six RBI.

David Buchanan (6-5) was called up again to replace Cliff Lee (Benton, Arkansas Razorbacks), who is on the disabled list for a second time because of a left elbow strain sustained last Thursday.

Buchanan, whose strategy was to get ahead of hitters, gave up three runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and no walks. He filled in for Lee during the left-hander's previous two-month stint on the DL, but made his last three starts in the minor leagues.

Brad Peacock (3-8) struggled in his first big-league start since being sent to the minors to work on his fastball command. He allowed eight runs and seven hits in five innings, and lost his third consecutive start.

RED SOX 2, CARDINALS 1 Xander Bogaerts drove in both runs, including a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, as Boston beat host St. Louis. The matchup of Shelby Miller and Joe Kelly, former teammates who were each other's best man, was a high quality draw that brought out their best. Each allowed a run in seven innings.

ROYALS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3 Mike Moustakas homered and drove in four runs, Yordano Ventura pitched six solid innings and visiting Kansas City beat Arizona to win its fifth consecutive series.

REDS 8, INDIANS 3 Mat Latos pitched seven shutout innings and chipped in with a hit as Cincinnati opened a seven-game homestand with a victory over visiting Cleveland.

PADRES 5, TWINS 4 (10) Center fielder Alexi Amarista made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the ninth inning and Seth Smith followed with a solo home run in the 10th to lift San Diego to a victory over host Minnesota.

MARINERS 7, BRAVES 3 Seattle handed visiting Atlanta its eighth consecutive loss, with Dustin Ackley and Logan Morrison hitting home runs in the third inning that sent the Mariners to a victory. Chris Young (10-6) allowed three runs in five innings.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 1 Drew Hutchison came within one out of his second career complete game, Jose Bautista homered and drove in three runs, and Toronto beat visiting Baltimore, snapping a four-game losing streak. Hutchison (8-9) struck out eight and allowed just one hit.

YANKEES 5, TIGERS 1 Chris Capuano outpitched Justin Verlander while Brian McCann and Chase Headley homered to send host New York past Detroit. Capuano gave up an unearned run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out eight and walking one.

RANGERS 3, WHITE SOX 1 Adam Rosales homered twice in a game for the first time in his career and Nick Tepesch pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning, leading visiting Texas over Chris Sale and Chicago. Tepesch (4-7) gave up six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

RAYS 7, ATHLETICS 3 Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run home run to help Jeremy Hellickson end a six-start winless stretch for his first victory in 11 months, and Tampa Bay beat host Oakland to avoid a sweep.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

NATIONALS 6, METS 1 Doug Fister took a five-hit shutout into the eighth inning, Adam LaRoche homered twice and Danny Espinosa also connected as host Washington beat New York. Fister (11-3) allowed one unearned run and six hits in 7 1/3 innings.

PIRATES 7, MARLINS 3 Josh Harrison had three hits to extend his hot streak and Jeff Locke overcame a shaky start to pitch seven innings as Pittsburgh beat visiting Miami. Locke (3-3) gave up three runs in the first two innings, and then shut out the Marlins over his last five.

ROCKIES 13, CUBS 4 Carlos Gonzalez homered, doubled and singled in his return to the lineup, and host Colorado snapped a five-game losing streak with a victory over Chicago. Corey Dickerson had four hits, drove in three and was a homer shy of the cycle.

GIANTS 7, BREWERS 4 Michael Morse and Pablo Sandoval each drove in three runs to lead visiting San Francisco to a victory over Milwaukee. Ryan Vogelsong (7-8) gave up one run on seven hits in six innings for the Giants to win consecutive starts for the first time since May.
