Formal charges filed again Bentonville man accused of killing grandmother

BENTONVILLE — Prosecutors filed formal charges Thursday against the Bentonville man accused of killing his grandmother.

Michael Eugene Conklin, 26 is charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery in connection with the death of Nelma Darline Conklin.

Conklin is accused of acting with premeditation and deliberation in causing his 76-year-old grandmother's death, according to court documents. He is also accused of committing a felony or misdemeanor theft against her, according to court documents.

Police found Nelma Conklin dead in the garage of her home at 3300 S.W. Elm Manor Ave. on July 20, according to a probable cause affidavit. Her body was concealed by trash bags and pieces of cardboard, the affidavit states.

Her body was sent for an autopsy to the Arkansas Crime Laboratory and it stab wounds to her neck was the cause of her death, according to court documents.

Police went to Nelma Conklin ’s home to do a welfare check on July 20. She had not been to work at the Walmart Supercenter on Pleasant Grove Road since July 14 and a coworker had been unable to contact her and called police, according to court documents.

Police interviewed Nelma Conklin’s family members and co-workers and learned that she and her grandson had not been getting along recently, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The case is assigned to Circuit Judge Robin Green.

Michael Conklin's arraignment will be Monday morning in Green's courtroom.
