Civil War events set up for August

Events to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War are planned for several locations in Arkansas, the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission announced.

A complete list of all August activities, along with event contacts and other information on sesquicentennial observances, is available at the commission website at arkansascivilwar150.com/events.

Bill Gurley of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will be the featured speaker at the Civil War Round Table of the Delta. He'll be talking about Civil War medicine Aug. 11 at Beth El Heritage Hall in Helena-West Helena.

Historian David Casto will speak about the 8th Missouri (U.S.) Cavalry on Aug. 12 at the Lonoke County Museum in Lonoke.

A Battle of the Bands Composition Competition for new works inspired by the Civil War will be featured during a Music in the Park event Aug. 16 at Historic Washington State Park in Hempstead County.

Civil War Dances of the Time Period will be performed by living-history participants from Historic Washington State Park at the Saline County Library in Benton on Aug. 18.
