GOLF UCA’s Angles earns Southland honor

Central Arkansas junior Pep Angles was named the 2013-2014 Southland Conference men’s golfer of the year for the second consecutive year while sophomore James Newton was named to the conference’s second team.

Angles is a three-time all-conference selection who averaged a conference-best 71.14 shots per round and won two individual medal honors this season. In 10 tournaments, he finished in the top 10 eight times and won tournaments at Louisiana Tech and Ole Miss. Angles also finished second at the conference championship.

Golden Suns selected to NCAA Regional

Arkansas Tech’s women were invited to the NCAA Division II Central Regional May 4-6 at Tartan Park Golf Course in Lake Elmo, Minn.

Arkansas Tech leads nine teams along with four individuals from nonqualifying teams including Henderson State and Harding’s Brittany Marquez.

The top three teams and the three lowest scoring individuals on nonqualifying teams will advance to the national tournament May 14-17 at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.

BASEBALL GAC names players of the week

Southern Arkansas’ Trevor Rucker and Arkansas Tech’s Randy Vallejo were named player of the week and pitcher of the week, respectively, by the Great American Conference.

Rucker, who shared player of the week honors with Jonathan Freemyer of Northwestern Oklahoma State, extended his hitting streak to 18 games and went 10 for 17 in four games last week and stole six bases.

Vallejo saved all five of the Wonder Boys victories last week, allowing 5 hits while striking out 1.

TENNIS Six Ozarks players earn all-conference honors

University of the Ozarks players Michael Skimbo, Bishop Bass, Corey Dillard, Tyler Keel, Todd Turner and Greg Knaggs were honored by the American Southwest Conference.

Skimbo was named second team at No. 6 singles. Bass and Dillard earned third-team honors at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Keel was honorable mention at No. 5 singles. Turner and Bass were honorable mention at No. 1 doubles. Dillard and Keel were named honorable mention at No. 2 doubles and Skimbo and Knaggs were named all-conference at No. 3 doubles.
