Bentonville student a finalist in Google doodle contest

Emily Stockand, a third-grader at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, is the Arkansas winner in this year's Doodle 4 Google contest.

Google employees Nikhil Sheel and Jordan Cushman made that announcement during a special school assembly this afternoon. Emily's drawing was one of thousands submitted from the state, Cushman said.

The public can now vote for their favorite doodle among each of the entries from the 50 state winners. Voting will be open until May 9 at www.google.com/doodle4google/vote.html.

The winning student's artwork will be displayed on the Google homepage June 9. The winner also will receive a $30,000 college scholarship and his or her school will receive a $50,000 grant from Google for a computer lab or technology program.

Emily's doodle featured the Google letters as fruits and vegetables growing in a garden.
