Gov. Faubus charged today that Winthrop Rockefeller money is financing candidates for governor against Faubus in the Democratic primary. His charge brought an immediate denial from a Rockefeller aide, who called it a “desperation” attempt by Faubus to portray his campaign as a “rich boy-poor boy” race. Rockefeller himself was not immediately available for comment, but he previously hit at Faubus’ “poor boy” theme, declaring that he did not believe the governor was a poor boy. An aide to Rockefeller said: “This is a ridiculous, a desperation statement and more of this type of statement can be expected in the governor’s attempt to make the campaign what he is calling a ‘poor boy-rich man’ race.”25 YEARS AGO April 28, 1989 EL DORADO - Sharon Benton enjoyed the show as authorities set fire to the first of five abandoned houses in her neighborhood that police said were used by crack-cocaine addicts and dealers. “This is better than looking at the Playboy Channel, HBO or Cinemax,” she said Wednesday. The houses in the city’s “Thunder Zone” - a name derived from a street term for the crystalline form of cocaine - were condemned by the City Council at the request of Police Chief John Morgan. Benton inherited her home in the neighborhood about a year ago. Crack users and dealers made their deals openly, she said. “When they (users and dealers) would see the man (police) coming, they would scatter,” she said.
