They will pray for their cities, their country and the people who run them.

The local observances are in conjunction with the 63rd annual National Day of Prayer. Springdale Mayor Doug Sprouse is hosting the fifth annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast on Thursday morning.

Randy Mullikin, a Springdale business owner and member of the mayor's prayer breakfast committee, said joining in prayer as a body of believers is rewarding and encouraging.

"We are a group of different churches and different businesses coming together to acknowledge this is a country that is under God, this is a city that is under God and there is a group of people who think that's important."

The nondenominational event is open to the public. Tickets are $10 and are available through the mayor's office or The Jones Center for Families in Springdale.

"We've asked God to bless our city, and I believe he is and he has been," Mullikin said. "Yes, people are involved, but God is in control."

Mullikin said there is a group of people who have prayed privately for the city for the past five years, and those prayers have been answered.

"We have asked God to bless our city, more than financially, more than in sales tax revenue," he said. "We have prayed for our city to be a light that shines for all of Northwest Arkansas, and we've seen growth. We have a lot to get excited for in the future."

Rogers Mayor Greg Hines and Bentonville Mayor Bob McCaslin each will host prayer breakfasts in their cities Thursday morning. Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan will speak at the midday prayer observance at Christian Life Cathedral in Fayetteville.

Congress established an annual day of prayer in 1952. The law was amended in 1988, designating National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May, according to The National Day of Prayer Task Force. The national observance will be broadcast from 8 to 11 a.m. online at nationaldayofprayer.org.
