Volunteer River Cleanup Set For Saturday

Friday, April 25, 2014

The Beaver Watershed Alliance is seeking volunteers to help pick up trash along the East Fork of the White River.

Check-in is 10 a.m. Saturday is at Bunch Park in Elkins and Combs Baptist Church in Combs.

Participants will be directed to various spots along the river, which flows into Beaver Lake, the drinking water source for most of Northwest Arkansas.

Door prizes and a free meal will be served from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring gloves, old clothes and shoes. Trash bags will be provided.

Saturday's cleanup is one of several events paid for with a $5,000 grant from the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance and Columbia Sportswear.

According to John Pennington, executive director of the Beaver Watershed Alliance, the Springdale-based nonprofit group will try to clean about 100 miles of waterway this year.
