Lots of exciting things are happening in the film community all a sudden. Lineups for a few film festivals have been revealed and other festivals have opened registration.
The University of Central Arkansas’ Digital Filmmaking program’s UCA Film Festival begins at 5:30 p.m. today at the Reynolds Performance Hall at UCA, immediately followed by the Filmmaker’s Ball at Legends at Back Achers Ranch.
I’ve been to many of UCA’s film festivals and they are always a blast and usually offer some gems. Films will include Vampire-Killing Prostitute, Watch the Rhine, Stuck, Seating Clayton, Murder Cum Laude, El Muppet Song, We Became What We Always Had Feared, Walls, Love’s a Blazin’, Meredith, Voiture pour l’ amour and Hosea Blues. The other big festival to announce its lineup is the Little Rock Film Festival, which is being held May 12-18. The main venue this year will be the Central Arkansas Library System’s new Ron Robinson Theater in the River Market District. Films will also be shown at other locations within walking distance or a trolley ride.
This marks the first year for the Cinematic NonFiction category being programmed by filmmaker Robert Greene, who will be showing his new film, Actress, out of competition. Some highlights from the lineup include the documentary Rich Hill, which won the Documentary Grand Jury Award at Sundance, about small-town teenagers in Missouri; Little Accidents starring Jacob Lofland (Mud, Justified) about the aftermath of a mining disaster in North Carolina; and in the World Shorts category, Minimus about a miniature gladiator.
The Made in Arkansas lineup was also revealed this week, and includes Taylor Feltner’s documentary Man Shot Dead, about the unexplained murder of his grandfather; and David Bogard’s Civil War short A Matter of Honor. The Ozark Foothills T Tauri Movie Camp is accepting registrations for its 10th year (can you believe it?).
The T Tauri is a yearly summer camp put on by organizers of the Ozark Foothills FilmFest to give students and aspiring filmmakers a chance to create through workshops on music videos, documentaries, screenwriting, and even stop-motion animation. Registration for the workshops is divided into categories ranging from $60 to $100 and is open to kids in grades 4-12, depending on the workshop. The camp is held at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville from July 21 to Aug 1.
