Companies reporting quarterly earnings Thursday included:

Altria Group Inc., the cigarette maker, a profit of $1.17 billion, or 59 cents a share, down from $1.38 billion, or 69 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose less than a percent to $4.01 billion. Shares rose 9 cents to close at $38.40.

Verizon Communications Inc., a profit of $5.99 billion, or $1.15 a share, up from $4.86 billion, or 68 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 5 percent to $30.82 billion. Shares fell $1.15 to close at $46.28.

Time Warner Cable Inc., a profit of $479 million, or $1.70 a share, up from $401 million,or $1.34 a share, a year ago. Revenue was $5.58 billion. The shares rose 53 cents to close at $140.040

Southwest Airlines Co., a profit of $152 million, or 22 cents a share, up from $59 million, or 8 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue climbed 2 percent to $4.17 billion. Shares rose 19 cents to close at $24.27.

Nucor Corp., the largest U.S. steel-maker by market value, a profit of $111 million, or 35 cents a share, up from $84.8 million, or 26 cents, a year ago. Revenue climbed to $5.11 billion. Shares fell $1.05 to close at $51.49.
