SPRINGDALE -- Rogers Heritage jumped out to a big lead early and coasted to a 17-2 run-rule win over Springdale High in the first game of a 7A/6A-West Conference baseball doubleheader Wednesday at Tyson Sports Complex.

The War Eagles took control with a nine-run second inning aided by four Springdale errors and never looked back in the five-inning game.

Every Heritage starter had at least one hit or an RBI as the War Eagles banged out 12 hits, building a 10-0 lead after two innings.

War Eagles coach Keith Kilgore was pleased with how his team took advantage of Springdale's mistakes.

"We had a good approach at the plate, they weren't pressing," Kilgore said. "We did what we needed to do and put pressure on them. Defensively we made plays and on the mound we attacked the zone."

Dalton McKaughan, Colton Wetzler and Daniel Sanchez each had two hits and an RBI for Heritage. Kacey Murphy drove in two with a double in the big second inning and also picked up the victory.

Murphy (5-1) pitched two scoreless innings. The left-hander allowed two hits and struck out four.

Brandon Norris also added two more scoreless innings in relief.

Springdale coach Billy Ray Rutledge said Heritage made the most of its opportunities, but his Bulldogs were responsible for some of those chances.

"A pitcher gets extended when you don't make plays," Rutledge said. "We should have been out of that inning a little bit quicker. If you start walking guys it lulls your defense to sleep a little bit and it kind of snowballed."

Hunter Necessary went 2-for-2 and scored a run for Springdale. Austin Solberg drove in a run with a single in the fifth.

Game 2

Rogers Heritage 12, Springdale High 2

Wetzler hit a pair of two-run home runs and picked up the win on the mound as the War Eagles completed the doubleheader sweep with another five-inning win.

Heritage (16-4, 8-2 7A/6A-West) scored three in the top of the first inning and never trailed on the night. The War Eagles sit in second place in the league and host Van Buren on May 1 at Veterans Park.

Wetzler, a senior left-hander, allowed two runs on four hits to improve to 5-1. He struck out seven and walked three.

Norris and Chase Kilgore added two hits apiece.

Brandon Castanon went 2-for-2 and drove in both runs with a triple in the first inning for Springdale (7-15, 1-9 7A/6A-West). Castanon also started a triple-play for the Bulldogs.
