Fayetteville Firefighters Ask Residents To Help 'Fill The Boot'

FAYETTEVILLE -- Firefighters will take to the streets Friday and Saturday to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Fayetteville Firefighters Association's annual "Fill the Boot" fundraiser is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at two intersections: Joyce Boulevard and Mall Avenue; Shiloh Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (west of Interstate 49).

Jimmy Vineyard, association president, said firefighters will collect money in boots while cars are stopped. Vineyard said most people donate spare change, but it's not uncommon to get a dollar -- or even $100.

The firefighters collected about $32,000 last year, according to Faith Gonzales, director of business development with the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Little Rock office.

Gonzales said the money goes to research for muscular dystrophy and other muscle disorders, such as Lou Gehrig's Disease. It's also used to defray individuals' and families' medical expenses and to send affected children to a summer camp in Little Rock.
