‘New’ GM seeks in filing to duck liabilities of ‘old’

As lawsuits fly, fight brews on pre-bankruptcy claims

A Chevrolet Corvette Z06 engine sits on display at the New York International Auto Show, which runs through Sunday. Parent company General Motors is asking for court protection from legal claims for actions before its 2009 bankruptcy, including installing faulty ignition switches linked to 13 deaths and numerous mechanical problems.

General Motors Co. and a team of trial lawyers are preparing for a court fight over whether the automaker is liable for the sins of its corporate past.
