GOLF Arkansas State’s Key third in Sun Belt

Arkansas State’s Easton Key is in third place after the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Grand Bear Golf Club in Saucier, Miss.

Key shot a 69 and trails co-leaders Stuart Smallwood and South Alabama’s Tyler Klava by one stroke.

As a team, the Red Wolves are tied for sixth with UALR and Western Kentucky at 302. Texas-Arlington leads with 286. Georgia State is second at 288.

Matias Calderon of UALR is tied for 14th with Texas-Arlington’s Cash Wilkerson and Louisiana-Monroe’s Charlie Macneal at 73.

UCA’s Angles leads Southland tournament

Central Arkansas’ Pep Angles leads after the first round of the Southland Conference men’s tournament at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas.

Angles opened with a 68 and holds a one-shot lead over Sam Houston State’s Zach Cabra.

Sam Houston State leads with a 290 followed by UCA at 296.

BASKETBALL Morrilton coach resigns

Morrilton boys’ Coach Trent Tipton has resigned and will be the district’s director of activities, athletics and custodial services, effective July 1.

Tipton has been the boys coach since 1999 and added director of athletic duties in 2015. His teams went 244-179, made eight state tournament appearances, reaching the quarterfinals six times and the semifinals twice.
